Oregon Desert

Often described as the “high desert”, this dry region is in the rainshadow east of Oregon’s Cascade Mountains. The elevation is between 2500 and 3000 feet, with numerous cinder cones and ridges of basalt rimrock rising higher. The area is host to many unique features that include lava flows, buttes and mesas, ice caves, and even wetlands. We’ll photograph the warm-toned welded tuff of Smith Rock, Fort Rock (once surrounded by a gigantic inland lake), the Painted Hills, and sand dunes at Fossil Lake. Late March is also a good time to visit the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, where Snow Geese, Sandhill Cranes, and other birds are migrating through.
